Sandrine meets her full archaeological team at Bashir Enterprises in Cairo, finalizing equipment, security, and travel arrangements to Alexandria.

To Sandrine’s pleasant surprise, Mohammed Bashir had come to the airport himself. After warm introductions, they stepped into a sleek black Mercedes-Benz and departed the bustling heart of Cairo. A half-hour later, the car turned through a gated entrance into a heavily secured corporate compound dominated by a solid, eight-story structure: the headquarters of Bashir Enterprises.
Inside the glass-fronted lobby, visitors’ badges were issued before Mohammed escorted them to a private bank of elevators. Pressing a specialized security card against the reader of lift number one, he explained that it was the only car programmed to reach the executive top floor, which housed his private office, his personal boardroom, and his administrative suite.
Stepping into the boardroom, they found a spacious chamber anchored by a large mahogany conference table surrounded by plush brown leather chairs. Two local gentlemen sat quietly beside Mohammed’s personal assistant. As the group entered, everyone stood.
“Please, make yourselves comfortable,” Mohammed invited with a welcoming gesture. “Let’s go around the table with brief introductions. I am Mohammed Bashir, coordinating the logistics and infrastructure for your undertaking.”
Sandrine stepped forward with quiet authority. “I am Sandrine Drake. I am heading up this expedition and funding the operation. I am a recently qualified archaeologist and Egyptologist; though early in my career, I’ve spent years conducting private research alongside my father, Philemon Drake, whom some of you may know.”
Seth introduced himself next. “I’m Seth Millar, an archaeologist and university colleague of Sandrine’s. It’s an honor to be part of this team.”
Jason Maple rose with an easy smile. “Jason Maple. I’ve spent years in the field across various international sites, and I was privileged to work alongside Sandrine’s father on several past excavations.”
All eyes then turned to the two local Egyptian specialists. The first man stood, offering a warm smile and a polite nod to each person. “I am Ali Osman, an Egyptian archaeologist with extensive field experience throughout my country. I, too, have had the distinct privilege of working with Mister Philemon Drake.”
As Ali sat, the second man rose. “I am Samir Khan. Like Ali, I bring years of regional excavation experience to this team, having also served alongside Mister Philemon Drake.”
Finally, Mohammed’s secretary stood. “I am Farida Amin. I have prepared all the registration dossiers, government antiquities permits, and personal clearances required for your team.” Farida stepped into her adjacent office for a moment, returning with an official leather binder containing the certified documents. Sandrine accepted the portfolio, placed it carefully into her leather briefcase, and clicked the combination lock shut.
With the formalities concluded, Mohammed led them on a tour of the facility. The elevator stopped on the fourth floor, opening into a vast, climate-controlled warehouse filled with crates, heavy-duty webbing, and neatly organized field equipment.
“Sandrine, these are the primary supplies you ordered and paid for,” Mohammed explained, gesturing to the rows of gear. “Your team can conduct a full inventory check tomorrow. For now, let’s view a sample of our general commercial stock on the lower level.”
After completing the tour, Mohammed checked in with the reception desk to confirm that the team’s reservations at the Shepheard Hotel were finalized. Assured that everything was in order, he arranged for a private car to transport them to their lodgings.
“Thank you for your exceptional efficiency, Mr. Bashir,” Sandrine said as they prepared to leave. “When we return tomorrow morning, I have a supplementary list of requirements we need to review and procure.”
“Of course. Have a peaceful evening, and I will see you in the morning,” Mohammed replied.
Arriving at the hotel late in the evening, the trio collected their room keys. Weary from travel, they opted for room service, agreeing to meet early the following morning in the dining room for breakfast. Over coffee and fresh pastries, they traded stories from past excavations—some impressive tales punctuated by good-natured skepticism—before Sandrine laid out her supplementary logistical checklist for review. Her colleagues scanned the document, unanimously agreeing with her additions.
Shortly thereafter, Mohammed’s driver arrived to take them back to the executive headquarters. Farida escorted them into the executive boardroom, where Mohammed waited with coffee. They moved swiftly through the expanded manifest item by item:
- Site Lighting & Power: Two heavy-duty industrial diesel generators, fully supplied and serviced.
- Field Kitchen: Three portable gas stoves with a triple set of 15-kilogram propane cylinders, along with heavy-duty stainless-steel cookware and utensils.
- All-Terrain Transport: Two four-wheel-drive Land Rovers secured on a weekly rental basis, scheduled for pickup in Alexandria for the final desert transit.
- Pack Animals: Four working camels accompanied by experienced handlers.
- Provisions: Bulk dry goods, including flour, rice, sugar, tea, coffee, beans, and high-protein canned rations.
- Storage Solutions: Heavy-duty, waterproof, and lock-sealed aluminum transit trunks.
- Field Shelter: Twenty handheld canvas umbrellas and eight large heavy-duty outdoor shade canopies.
- Security Detail: A 24/7 armed perimeter guard detachment sourced through an elite local security agency, to be contracted under independent terms.
- Perishables & Refrigeration: A twice-weekly supply chain for fresh meat, produce, and dairy, supported by three kerosene-powered field refrigerators.
As the meeting drew to a close, Mohammed smiled warmly. “I have purchased your rail tickets from Cairo Ramses Station to Alexandria for tomorrow morning. The train departs promptly at nine o’clock. Your primary equipment crates will travel on the same train under armed guard to ensure safe unloading in Alexandria. Upon arrival, you will meet your ten newly contracted field assistants, take delivery of the Land Rovers, and rendezvous with the camel handlers and your local desert guide. I wish you and your expedition extraordinary success. Bon voyage.”
