Chapter Two
Thomas’s dedication and relentless work ethic soon won him accolades from his employers. As his vision took shape on the landscape, the architectural community began to take notice. Companies that had previously overlooked him now approached him with lucrative offers, yet he declined them all. When asked why he wouldn’t move to a more prestigious firm, he replied simply, “I remain faithful to the company that gave me my first opportunity. I have the integrity to finish what I have started.”
This loyalty solidified his reputation, and his employers, moved by his character, rewarded him with a significant promotion. With his career on an upward trajectory, Thomas and Sophia finally set a date for their wedding. Preparations began in earnest, fueled by the excitement of a life they believed was destined for perfection.
Meanwhile, Thomas’s sister, Olivia, completed her studies and joined their father, Reuben, in the family business. It was understood that she would one day inherit the company, and Reuben was stunned by her natural acumen. She possessed a sharp judgment and an ability to make decisive moves that he hadn’t fully anticipated. He realized then that Thomas’s refusal to join the firm had been a blessing in disguise; it had opened the door for the best person for the job. Olivia was a caring leader, but she was also a formidable taskmaster who brooked no compromise when it came to their goals.
By early spring, the wedding arrangements were nearly complete for their planned summer ceremony. Olivia and Sophia’s friend, Gail, were set to be bridesmaids, while Thomas’s cousin, Kelvin, and Sophia’s cousin, Nolan, were chosen as best men. Father McKinley of the local Presbyterian Church was to conduct the service. Both families had agreed to split the costs, and as the day approached, spirits were at an all-time high. It promised to be a fairy-tale event, perhaps the grandest the city had seen in years.
However, dark clouds were gathering on the horizon.
Thomas and his family were well aware of Kelvin’s reputation. He was a man known for a nefarious trail of broken hearts and had often escaped the wrath of vengeful boyfriends and husbands. He arrived three weeks before the wedding, ostensibly to reconnect and learn his place in the procession. But upon meeting Sophia, he was instantly smitten by her captivating beauty. With a motive both evil and selfish, he began to plot how he might conquer her before the vows were even spoken.
Kelvin was an expert charmer, using his physique and polished tongue as weaponry. He invited Sophia to what he called a “casual, innocent lunch” to get to know his future family member. Naively, she accepted. At a fancy hotel downtown, Kelvin worked his wicked talents, weaving false stories of worldly travels and showering her with deceptive compliments. Mesmerized by his sophisticated manipulation, Sophia’s resolve faltered. In a moment of profound lapse in judgment, she found herself in a hotel room where the unthinkable occurred.
It was only afterward, as she gathered her clothes and saw the satisfied, predatory smile on Kelvin’s face, that the weight of her mistake crashed down upon her. She felt an overwhelming sense of disgust. She spent a long time in the shower, but no amount of water could cleanse the stain she felt in her heart. She insisted he take her home immediately.
Late that afternoon, Lana found her daughter curled on her bed in heart-breaking sobs. Sophia could not hide her secret from her mother and confidante; she tearfully confessed the entire episode. Sensing the immediate danger, Kelvin packed his bags and skipped town before the sun went down.
When Lucas learned of the betrayal, he was consumed by a fitful rage. He had every intention of retrieving his service rifle to put Kelvin down like a stray dog. It took all of Lana’s strength to calm him. Eventually, a meeting was arranged at the Taylor home, with Thomas and his parents in attendance.
The air was thick with insults and accusations until Thomas spoke. Though he was fuming, his voice was dangerously low and controlled.
“Dad,” Thomas said, looking at Reuben, “you must take your share of the responsibility for this. You were the one who insisted Kelvin be the best man. He is your godson; you knew his reputation, yet you insisted.”
Then he turned to Sophia. “And you, Sophia. This betrayal is compounded by what we promised one another. We swore to remain chaste until our wedding day. I have kept that promise. You have not.”
He took a jagged breath, his face pale. “The wedding is off. You can keep the ring, Sophia. I am going home to learn how to live with a broken heart. Right now, I feel as if my chest is going to explode.”
Without another word, he walked out, leaving two families in the ruins of a bitter enmity.
In the months that followed, Thomas lost his zest for life. A heavy apathy gripped his soul. Life had lost its meaning. Sophia tried calling him—not to reconcile, but to beg for his forgiveness—but he was a shell of his former self. He stopped going to work, and eventually, the firm had to let him go. He simply accepted it, retreating further into a protective shell.
Four months into his self-imposed exile, news reached the family that Kelvin had finally overstepped his mark. He had unknowingly targeted a young woman named Dylan Grande, the favourite niece of a high-ranking Mafioso. Kelvin’s body was recovered in a bayou hundreds of miles away. There was an investigation, but with no leads and many powerful people happy to see him gone, the file was eventually moved to the bottom of the pile and forgotten.
Sophia proved more resilient. With the support of family and therapy groups, she began to piece her life back together. She still loved Thomas, but she realized that mourning “spilt milk” would not change the past. Though she began to date again, the emotional pain remained her constant companion.
Slowly, Thomas began to leave the confines of his home, starting with early morning walks to the park to watch the geese on the pond. Olivia tried to convince him to join the family business, but the fractured relationship between Thomas and his father remained a significant hurdle. Nevertheless, he began to eat breakfast and lunch with his mother, Emma, though he still retreated to his room for supper.
“Give him time,” Emma would tell Reuben. “His heart is still raw.”
One evening, Olivia joined him in his room for dinner, trying to stir a spark of life in him with stories from the office.
“Thomas, tell me,” she said, trying a bit of humour. “Who do you think is stronger: men or women?”
He looked at her blankly.
“An old man was asked that once,” she continued. “He said women are stronger. It takes six men to carry a man to his grave, but it only takes one woman to put him there.”
To her surprise, Thomas let out a small, genuine laugh. Encouraged, she told him about a new, small-statured Asian employee who had finally stood up to Derek, the company bully. With supernatural speed and technique, the new hire had left the bully sprawled on his back, earning the respect of the entire floor.
As the evening wound down, Thomas looked at his sister. “And what about your love life, Olivia? Are there any suitors on the horizon, or are you set on being a spinster?”
It was a question he wouldn’t have dared ask in the past. Olivia smiled softly. “None yet. There are suitors, but none suitable. I’m not prepared to get involved in something if my heart isn’t in it.”
For the first time in a long time, the silence between the siblings wasn’t filled with grief, but with the faint, flickering hope of a new beginning.
